My recent trip to Potholes Reservoir (see previous article) was an experience that I will never forget. Beyond the scope of my family’s hard work on turning our jon boat into a miniature bass boat this year, these bait combinations have surged my confidence upwards. Don’t just take my word for it, try one of these combinations and see how successful you can be too!
The Reaction Innovations Smallie Beaver is a great size for smallmouth and largemouth bass. Available colors are numerous, but the durability is what caught me by surprise. I have used creature baits from two other companies, but Reaction Innovations surpassed them with flying colors. At 3.5 inches long, and 12 in a package, you’re sure to set the hook on some big bass. Twelve come in a package, which is a great deal for around $4.
The River2Sea Touch Down Jig Head is a perfect match for the Smallie Beaver. I prefer to use these matte finished jig heads because weights are visible when using creature baits. The dark profile and the shape of the “football” resembles that of a crayfish tail. Most importantly, they hold up well when fishing rocky areas, and the razor sharp hook will make sure you get that prize in the boat. I prefer 3/8oz which come 5-in-a-pack for $5.
The Gary Yamamoto Hula Grub has always been a favorite of anglers across the country. While most favorable in the Spring, this soft bait can be fished anywhere, anytime. I prefer to texas-rig the bait on a 3/0 jig head, or even peg the bait when fishing weeds. Vast choices of colors and three sizes (4”,5”,6”) will provide you with exciting action year round. All three sizes come with 10-in-a-pack for about $6.
The Gamakatsu Round Jig Head is a great match for the Hula Grub and provides a second “bait collar” that helps keep the plastic from tearing off, which is especially useful for Yamamoto baits. The unpainted head is a great match because it’s shape resembles that of the grub. I prefer 3/16 oz, which comes 5-in-a-pack for about $4.
